State of the spa industry

The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) estimates the spa industry is an $18 billion industry that is experiencing robust growth. Consider the analysis from the Bureau for Labor Statistics, which shows that employment growth for massage therapists wildly exceeds the average for other occupations. The massage therapy field is predicted to grow 26% by 2026, compared to 7% for all other occupations.

Those figures demonstrate the rising demand for massage services. AMTA and Zogby Analytics consumer surveys estimate that 20% to 30% of Americans reported getting a massage between July 2017 and July 2018, and an average of 31% of adult Americans received a massage in the previous five years.

The popularity of massage is increasing for one key reason: The importance of massage therapy in health and wellness is being recognized more and more. Over half of those who said they’d gotten a massage in the previous year, 52%, did so for medical reasons. Another 33% said they sought out massage for stress relief and relaxation.

We offer complimentary aromatherapy as part of the journey, to really enhance the senses and the overall experience. Our environment is conducive to both men and women, and it is very upscale.”

How we generate revenue

“People say ‘It’s a spa business,’ but really it’s a membership business,” Boresow says. “We're in the health and wellness space and the services that we are delivering are massage and skin care at an affordable price due to the membership model.”

Our revenue streams are based on our upscale massage and skin therapy services offered at an affordable monthly membership price. Additional revenue streams are created around our proprietary retail product lines, add-on services (we call them Elevations!) and multiple levels of customizable memberships.

The membership dollars afford our franchise owners the opportunity to forecast sales and expenses and predict scheduling needs while providing customers with lower pricing and access to more frequent massage services and skincare at a discounted price so they can receive the benefits more often both physically and monetarily.

Our ideal customer is anyone who “wants to live better or continue to feel better,” says Susan. “Whether that is being a better athlete, parent, teacher, boss, whatever it may be, it is someone who wants to continue to feel good and do good. There are so many people that suffer from stress, anxiety and pain in addition to those that just want to elevate their healthy living routines. There are a breadth of people that we're looking to tap into.”
